TOP TEN Key Strategies for dealing with SIBO.

Antibiotics can sometimes be helpful for SIBO. However, antibiotics alone are typically not enough for SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth). Minnesota's Beloved Functional Gut Specialist, Dr. Paul Deglmann, DC, DACNB, FACFN, Board-certified in Functional Neurology, has successfully helped thousands in his clinic suffering from Gut Imbalance and Gut Health Issues. On this page, he shares his TOP TEN Key Strategies for dealing with SIBO.

Background: Over 36 million people suffer from SIBO. Most SIBO sufferers were prescribed antibiotics. With antibiotics alone, many only find temporary relief. For many, their SIBO will return within months (Recurrent SIBO)! Some people also develop additional conditions outside of SIBO such as IBS, C. Diff, Leaky Gut, joint pain, inflammatory skin issues (eczema, dermatitis, rosacea) and Autoimmune conditions such as psoriasis, Hashimoto’s, Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and more. Chronic fatigue, anxiety, and other mental health issues are not uncommon and can also be associated with SIBO.

Dr. Paul says people don't have to suffer in this way...
"Addressing SIBO for the first time should be easy, when done right and that means not relying on antibiotics alone!"

Dr. Paul shares his key strategies below, when it comes to SIBO.....that he’s seen results with in his clinic over and over again.

# 1 Be comprehensive in your approach! Don't just tackle the harmful bacteria, but all other microbes that could be causing SIBO-like symptoms in your body.

Current SIBO testing in a doctor’s office only tests for the gas production of bacteria in the gut. Many physicians argue that this gas could also potentially be made by microbes in the gut other than bacteria. Once doctors diagnose you with SIBO, most prescribe antibiotics, which only tackle the bacteria. Unfortunately, in addition to bacteria, other microbes, such as fungus, yeast, and additional parasites, can also cause SIBO-like symptoms.
Therefore, in my clinic, for SIBO, I suggest and use a natural broad-spectrum antimicrobial that targets the unwanted microbes – bacteria, yeast/fungus, and parasites! It's a great option, especially for those who've been on multiple rounds of antibiotics.

Ask the Questions~

  • Is my SIBO program only tackling only bad bacteria?
  • Are we addressing any potential excess yeast/fungus, or parasites that might be contributing to SIBO-like symptoms?

# 2 Excess or Multiple rounds of antibiotics can worsen the problem.

A healthy gut microbiome is critical for our bodies to function properly. Antibiotics don't just target and kill a lot of the bad (harmful) bacteria, but also the good bacteria in your gut!

Multiple rounds of antibiotics can cause significant disruption of the essential good bacteria in our gut, leading to complications such as C.diff.

Lack of good bacteria in the gut can also lead to the overgrowth of other opportunistic microbes, such as yeast, in the body, which can result in additional SIBO-like symptoms.

Ask the Questions~

  • Have I already tried antibiotics more than once?
  • Do I also have symptoms of Yeast overgrowth?
  • What steps do I take to replace the good bacteria I lost because of the antibiotics?

# 3 Nurture and grow the good bacteria in your gut. Pick the right low-fiber Prebiotic.

Most patients are so focused on getting rid of the bad bacteria from their gut that they forget to feed and nurture the good bacteria. Now, good bacteria love fiber. Therefore, in a healthy individual, fiber is a great prebiotic (food for the good bacteria) source. However, unfortunately, most dealing with SIBO can't handle a high-fiber diet as it worsens their symptoms.

Most SIBO sufferers can't work with traditional high-fiber prebiotics. Therefore, for them, it is important to pick a low-fiber prebiotic. After years of research on good low-fiber prebiotics, I chose NutriRestore's Pomegranate Complex. This is a great prebiotic source with less than 1 gram of fiber.

Ask the Questions~

  • What have I done to feed the good bacteria in my gut?
  • If the good bacteria need fiber, but I can't take fiber, then WHAT CAN I TAKE?
  • What steps do I take to replace the good bacteria I lost because of the antibiotics?

# 4 Help to Reinoculate the gut with the right Probiotic, specially formulated with SIBO in mind.

Most SIBO sufferers understand the importance of a good Probiotic. Still, I must emphasize this more - Not all probiotics work in SIBO. Taking the wrong probiotic can make SIBO sufferers feel worse.

After having helped thousands with their gut problems in my office, for SIBO, it is initially suggested that the probiotic be a good spore-based product that contains colonies of bacteria that resist the harsh GI environments in its dormant state and become active in the colon. In addition, I suggest and prefer Probiotics that also include dairy-free immunoglobulins.

What are Immunoglobulins?
Immunoglobulins are a type of protein molecule produced by white blood cells...they can come from things like colostrum that are dairy-based, but also can be derived from bovine serum in a dairy-free form. Immunoglobulins perform two critical roles in SIBO sufferers: 1. Can bind and help with elimination a wide range of microbes, including bacteria, as well as toxins 2. Supports GI barrier health and integrity, which is important because SIBO can commonly compromise the barrier and contribute to leaky gut.

Ask the Questions~

  • Am I on the best Probiotic for SIBO?
  • Is my Probiotic helping grow bacteria colonies in my colon?
  • Does it include dairy-free immunoglobulins?

Since the majority of chronic SIBO sufferers develop Leaky Gut, a good SIBO program must include the all-important step of repairing the Gut lining and Gut wall!

# 5 Address Leaky Gut and Repair the Gut Wall.

Chronic SIBO commonly results in a phenomenon called Leaky Gut. As the name suggests in Leaky Gut, the gut barrier gets compromised, which results in foods and antigens that leak out, enter our bloodstream, and wreak havoc in other parts of the body! Yuck!
The symptoms of Leaky Gut can include skin issues, autoimmunity, food reactions and sensitivities, digestive issues, headaches, chronic fatigue, and malabsorption syndrome. Since it is very common for chronic SIBO sufferers to develop Leaky Gut, a good SIBO program must include the crucial step of repairing the Gut lining & restoring gut integrity.

Ask the Questions~

  • Do I also suffer from Leaky Gut?
  • Do I have symptoms beyond my Gut, such as skin breakouts, headaches, joint aches and pains, unexplained food sensitivities, etc.?
  • Are my food sensitivities getting progressively worse?

Addressing poor digestion and absorption can significantly improve symptoms

# 6 Address Malabsorption Syndrome and nutrient deficiencies common in chronic SIBO patients.

Many with chronic SIBO suffer from poor digestion and malabsorption. When the gut microbiome gets disrupted, it's common for people with SIBO to develop several nutritional deficiencies. Many don’t have optimal digestion of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, which can lead to poor absorption of key nutrients from their food. When left unchecked, additional long-term health issues can develop. That's why many SIBO sufferers often have low energy, and their bodies can start to break down.

Ask the Questions~

  • Do I have poor digestion and malabsorption and associated nutritional deficiencies?
  • Do I suffer from chronic fatigue?

# 7 Your Diet can make you feel worse! Dietary considerations during and after SIBO!

Chronic SIBO sufferers can feel worse if they try to help their SIBO with diet alone. Depending on what you eat and drink, your symptoms can flare. For example, a healthy gut microbiome needs daily fiber. However, if you give a high-fiber diet to someone with SIBO, their symptoms can worsen, and often the symptoms can be significant.

In addition, any high-sugar foods can further feed the bad (harmful) bacteria and yeast in your gut. Therefore, I suggest a
Low Fermentation Diet. The emphasis of a low fermentation diet is to help ensure we are not feeding the unwanted microbes! Once the bacteria, unwanted microbes and imbalanced microbiome have been addressed, we then slowly introduce a more diverse, high-fiber diet.

Ask the Questions~

  • Is my diet making me feel worse?
  • If I can't take high amounts of fiber, what can I take to feed the good bacteria in my gut?
  • Am I consuming too much sugar in my diet?
  • Do I have a plan to transition my diet once I start feeling better?

# 8 Many SIBO patients develop and are also diagnosed with other conditions. Here are some related conditions that can develop or get worse when dealing with chronic SIBO.

Chronic SIBO can complicate things in our body and often result in Leaky Gut. Disrupting the gut microbiome and gut barrier can cause additional chronic problems. I often see patients in my clinic with chronic SIBO also being diagnosed with other conditions such as IBS, Celiac disease, Hashimoto’s or hypothyroidism, autoimmune conditions, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, headaches, and more.

The good news is: Addressing SIBO can potentially improve symptoms in ALL these related conditions.

Ask the Question~

  • What other condition(s) have I been diagnosed with that could be related to my SIBO?
  • Do I understand other conditions associated with SIBO?

# 9 Understand the extent of your problem and track symptoms to ensure your SIBO program is working

Too many people guess their progress and never take the time to track it. When it comes to SIBO, don't just guess; track your progress. Monitoring symptoms allows you to better understand what's working and how to tweak/make adjustments when something is not. To anyone ordering my SIBO kits, I offer an awesome progress tracker, and people love using it. The best part, it also lets you know when you are done!

Ask the Questions~

  • Do I have a way to track my symptoms today?
  • Do I understand the full extent of my symptoms regarding SIBO?

# 10 What lifestyle changes should I be making to support my efforts?

When I see patients in my clinic, I tell them, "I don't want you  spending time and money on addressing your SIBO only to have it recur." It's important to understand why it happened and what we can do to give you the best chance that it doesn't recur.
So many SIBO sufferers fall into the trap of Recurrent SIBO. But you don't have to be part of that group. I will show you easy dietary changes and lifestyle modifications that give you the best chance of escaping the recurrent SIBO trap. In addition, I transition most of my in-clinic patients to a SIBO Defense Program to try and maintain a healthy microbiome and also increase the probability of breaking the recurrent cycle.

Ask the Questions~

  • Do I better understand what I can do to keep SIBO from recurring?
  • What is my plan?

MESSAGE FROM DR. PAUL

"Thank you for taking the time and reading this page. I am Dr. Paul Deglmann, DC, DACNB, FACFN, Functional Medicine Practitioner, Board-certified in Functional neurology, with a specialty in gut health. Over the last 20 years, I have helped thousands in my clinic with gut health issues, including SIBO. Over 36 million Americans suffer from SIBO, and many of them deal with "Recurrent SIBO," i.e., their SIBO keeps coming back! They try to limp along with band-aid approaches at home. I know this is a big number, and I can't see all these patients in my clinic. So, I have developed an online program for SIBO sufferers to try in the comfort of their homes. It’s the same program I offer my patients in the clinic, minus the individualized protocols based off of testing and medical advice. After twenty years of doing this with patients in my clinic, I’ve decided to share my SIBO gut program with you, with the hope that you can follow the essential steps in a good SIBO program and achieve similar results that my patients typically achieve in the clinic. Please know that no matter where you are in your SIBO journey, I have probably seen it and have been able to help a vast majority that have come to see me. From recently diagnosed to very sick,  I have options for you to give you the best chance of improving your gut health. Thank you!"

*Now, for the first time ever, Dr. Paul has created a short video explaining his exact health-boosting and gut rebalancing program for SIBO. In the Video below, he shares his detailed approach and special instructions for how you can do this from the comfort of your own home!

Let's Recap!
What to Expect from a good SIBO Program...
1. Understand the extent of damage SIBO may have caused in your body.

2. Excess (or multiple) rounds of antibiotics can worsen the problem.

3. It's crucial to nurture the good bacteria in your gut and give it a chance to grow, even as you tackle the bad bacteria.

4. Not all Probiotics are right for SIBO patients. Picking the right one can be key to your success.

5. Not all Prebiotics are right for SIBO patients. Picking the right one is also important!

6. A good SIBO program must address a leaky gut (if present) and repair the gut barrier.

7. Address malabsorption and nutritional
deficiencies that are common in people with chronic SIBO. This gives you the best chance of ensuring that you feel better quickly, early on in the program.

8. Understand the full extent of any potential damage to your body due to SIBO. Are your symptoms local or widespread? Have you developed additional health conditions, such as hypothyroidism? If so, is it related to SIBO?

9. Don't guess - Track Your Symptoms, Track your Progress and know when you're done!

10. Do your best to avoid Recurring SIBO - Understand and implement the diet changes needed short-term while on the program and have a long-term diet and lifestyle plan.

Remember: You are unique. Everyone's journey is different.
My message to you: Don't compare results to others and also don't expect problems that others may encounter. Stay focused on your body and your healing to give you the best chance of reaching your health goals!
